STILL TUNED IN: Robert Nelson, head of one of the county’s largest public relations firms, has moved to Idaho to escape big city life. . . . But living in the shadows of the Grand Tetons wasn’t far enough away to keep hometown news from Nelson. “My radio alarm went off at 6:30 a.m. and the next thing I heard was [County Clerk-Recorder] Gary Granville reading Measure R election results. I couldn’t believe it,” said Nelson. His radio was tuned to a station in Jackson Hole, Wyo.

ALARMING TREND: Anaheim police answer an average of 16,500 false burglar alarm calls each year and are looking for ways to remedy the situation. Residents and businesses are charged $50 per false alarm if more than three occur within a year. “In some cases people don’t really mind paying,” said Capt. Jack Parra. “What they fail to realize is just how it impacts our ability to respond to other calls.” . . . Two officers, a dog, a helicopter and sometimes the SWAT team respond to the calls, 99.5% of which turn out to be false.

LOCAL LANDING: Filmgoers may notice familiar backdrops in the movie “Apollo 13,” parts of which were filmed at the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station, Los Alamitos Armed Forces Reserve Center, and Rockwell headquarters in Seal Beach. “We are really marketing Orange County and letting the industry know what we have here as far as locations go,” said Cristie Silverberg of the Orange County Film Commission. . . . The film, which stars Tom Hanks, opens tonight.

HOT TIPS: “Safe and sane” fireworks are legal in Buena Park, Costa Mesa, Santa Ana, Garden Grove and Stanton. But elsewhere in Orange County, all fireworks are banned, and fire officials are asking the public to call a hot line to report violators. “We want people to protect themselves and their neighborhood,” said the Orange County Fire Authority’s Maria Sabol. . . . The hot line number is: (714) 538-3501.

WEATHER: Night and morning low clouds. Highs in the upper 70s; lows in the low 60s. (B8)
