Learning to field a new position hasn’t affected Eric Anthony’s contributions at the plate.

Anthony, making only his fourth start at first base, went four for five, drove in four runs and scored three times in the Cincinnati Reds’ 10-4 victory over the Phillies Thursday at Philadelphia.

Anthony, who has played outfield for almost all his professional career, made a ninth-inning error that was inconsequential.

“I’m not completely comfortable at first base, but things certainly have been working out well for me,” he said of raising his average from .265 to .315.

Red Manager Davey Johnson has no plans to move Anthony since regular first baseman Hal Morris is nursing a sore hamstring.

Pete Schourek (6-4) gave up six hits and four runs in 5 2/3 innings and drove in two runs. Ron Gant hit his 16th home run and added two RBIs for the Reds.

The victory gave the Reds, who have a 5 1/2-game lead over second-place Houston in the NL Central, a tie with the Phillies for the league’s best record at 37-21 and a three-game sweep while outscoring the Phillies, 23-7, in the series.

Paul Quantrill (7-3) took the loss. Tommy Greene relieved Quantrill in making his first major league appearance this season after battling tendinitis in his right shoulder.

St. Louis 6, Chicago 4--Ramon Caraballo hit his first major league home run and Ken Hill earned his first victory in six starts as the Cardinals won at Chicago to end a five-game losing streak.

Brian Jordan also homered in support of Hill (5-4), who won after four losses and a no-decision. His last victory came May 30 against Colorado.

In seven innings, Hill gave up two runs and eight hits, walked two and struck out three. Kevin Foster (5-5) took the loss.
