Miss a Few Innings of the Game? ESPN Says It’s Solely to Blame

An ESPN mix-up Wednesday caused many Southern California viewers to miss the first two innings of the Dodger-Atlanta Brave game featuring Hideo Nomo, although it was unclear why the unscheduled blackout occurred.

“We’re just as upset as anyone else,” ESPN spokesman Chris LaPlaca said. “This was a chance to show a great game with a hot pitcher to the home fans. When you do as many games as we do, it very rarely happens, but human error does enter into it. We feel bad, but it happens.”

ESPN had been promoting Nomo’s appearance for several days, but local viewers initially got the alternate game, San Francisco at Cincinnati.

The Dodger game was picked up in the top of the third and, after a two-minute interruption in that inning, shown in its entirety.

“That’s not supposed to happen,” LaPlaca said. “It lays on our end. I don’t have a clear answer why.”
