THOUSAND OAKS : Cut Cable Results in Lost Phone Service

Share

As many as 2,700 Thousand Oaks residents and businesses lost phone service after a construction company inadvertently cut through an underground cable, officials said Friday.

GTE repair crews worked around the clock to repair the cable cut Thursday afternoon under Thousand Oaks Boulevard near the Civic Arts Plaza.

“The problem is that you can’t just tie it back together,” said Mike Raydo, GTE public affairs manager.

“Each individual wire has to be spliced back together.”

The painstaking work is expected to continue into the weekend, Raydo said.

Raydo would not estimate the cost of the repairs, but said the total could exceed $100,000.

Line breaks this severe are unusual, Raydo said, because the phone company provides maps of its cables, which construction companies are careful to avoid.
