A woman was shot to death Saturday night by her boyfriend, who then shot himself in the neck, police said.

The woman’s 8-year-old son was downstairs in the condominium the couple shared when the shootings occurred, said Sgt. Jeff Beeler. The boy was unharmed.

The shootings occurred around 6 p.m. in the 2000 block of Cherokee Street. Dawn Hill, described as about 35 years old, was pronounced dead at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana. Her boyfriend, Kirkland O’Hara, was in critical condition there late Saturday, Beeler said.

“I think it’s a domestic violence situation,” Beeler said. “O’Hara is the suspect.”

Neighbors did not report any fighting or shots during the evening. Police had received a 911 call from the condo at 6 p.m., he said, but had no details late Saturday. When police and paramedics arrived at the home, they found Hill and O’Hara on the floor of an upstairs bedroom.

Hill was wounded in the upper torso, he said.

“Neighbors said everything was OK,” Beeler said. “No one heard the shots.”
