The Internet: Get a Handle on It or Ignore It?

Share

The Internet as described by Bob Sipchen is a mess (“Walking the Beat in Cyberville,” May 14). Because there is no central Internet authority, everyone is doing exactly as he or she wants. The Internet is growing like a badly planned city and will continue to suffer until we get a better grip on its rapid growth. Until then, individuals like Donn Parker and Dan Farmer will do what they believe to be best for its existence.

Sipchen spews forth the concept that the world is in the hands of either bisexual S&M; freak hackers or 66-year-old ex-Sunday school teachers. Given the choice, and assuming that their code is solid, I’d have to pick the hackers.

The Internet exists today in all its glory because, until a couple of years ago, it was largely ignored. The attraction of the Internet is based on that fact alone. The Internet is because of itself. The meddling proposed by “the mainstream” will result in the digital version of “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.”

Why doesn’t the magazine stick to showing us fashion that nobody wants, houses that are completely impractical to live in and offensive art by unknown artists?
