THOUSAND OAKS : Open-Heart Surgery Update at Seminar

Share

About 200 doctors, nurses and technicians involved in open-heart surgery are expected for the third annual cardiac symposium at Lake Sherwood Country Club on Sept. 8 and 9.

The symposium, offered by the California Center for Cardiothoracic Surgery in Thousand Oaks, presents talks on the latest techniques and theory in open-heart surgery, said Brigit Kolb, symposium coordinator.

“It is an update on everything developing in revascularization,” Kolb said. In revascularization, surgeons take sections of arteries from other parts of the body, such as behind the breast or in the leg, and graft them onto heart arteries to replace defective portions.

The agenda includes a welcome by center founder Dr. Mohammad A. Gharavi, as well as discussion of early detection of heart disease, arterial grafting, heart valves and epidemiologic research in the field.

A guest speaker from the Huntington Library will talk about presidents and pirates in separate presentations on each of the two days of the seminar.

“It’s a little something to lighten things up right before lunch,” Kolb said.

Registration is $100 for physicians and $50 for nurses and technicians. For more information, call the center at 379-9456.
