Police are searching for a couple who stole money from several area residents by pretending to be new neighbors who locked their keys in the car, authorities said Wednesday.

A man described as in his 40s and a woman in her 30s have been knocking on doors and telling residents that they need to borrow from $20 to $40 to pay a locksmith to retrieve keys from their car, Police Sgt. Dann Bean said.

The pair would try to gain trust by saying that they are neighbors who just moved into the area and promise to return the money the next day, Bean said. But the couple disappeared and the money was never returned, investigators added.

Police are asking anyone with information about the couple to call (714) 965-4400.

Authorities did not say when and exactly where the incidents happened.
