The Black Creative Professionals Assn. is hosting a reception for comic book artist and publisher David G. Brown on Friday night.

Brown recently won a $10,000 grant from the city Cultural Affairs Department to create a “community comic book” that will be distributed to inner-city neighborhoods.

Brown, a graphic artist, gained attention three years ago after creating the “L.A. Phoenix” comic book. In the series, the super-hero Phoenix rises from the ashes of burned-out buildings to battle crime across the city.

Brown says he came up with the idea in the wake of the 1992 riots as a positive and artistic way to address inner-city problems. He also teaches comic-book art classes to young people. With the grant, Brown says he will help young people create publications that focuses on solutions to problems that affect them. The 6:30 p.m. reception will be at Gallery Plus, 4333 Degnan Blvd. Information: (310) 397-1468.
