J. Walter Thompson Settles Deceptive Advertising Charges: The Federal Trade Commission alleged that the New York-based agency couldn’t substantiate a claim that nine of 10 Jenny Craig customers would recommend the weight-loss program to a friend. The settlement prohibits the agency from misrepresenting any survey or test in connection with any weight-loss program or product. The FTC said this is the fourth time the agency has settled deceptive advertising charges since the mid-1970s. Previous settlements have barred the agency from making misrepresentations about cars, household appliances and professional associations. Separately, JWT named Chris Jones, 40, to the new position of co-president of its worldwide agency, putting him on track to succeed J. Walter Thompson’s CEO, Burt Manning, 64, in two years. Jones is currently chief executive of JWT’s London office.
