Re “Natural Resources Library Will Not Become History,” July 7:
The Wilson Administration has created and provides on the Internet an unparalleled tool to empower Californians to better protect and manage the environment--the California Environmental Resources Evaluation System (https://ceres.ca.gov).
CERES accesses millions of pieces of data and information on virtually every aspect of California’s natural and cultural resources--from state and federal agencies, the University of California, counties, watershed groups, environmental nonprofits and many other Internet sources. Over 2,500 parties access CERES every day to, for instance, learn the current status of the state’s water supply, examine satellite imagery of the Sierra Nevada forests, or find out how to obtain a hunting license.
And yet one individual suggests that archiving the contents of a single state library--a small, largely historical collection that serves only a dozen people a day--is “part of a terrible, anti-intellectual, anti-science, anti-learning fad that is sweeping the country.”
Give me a break, and get on line!
