Simpson Trial

Has a more disingenuous piece ever appeared in Opinion than Howard Weitzman’s “Defending the Justice System--From the Lawyers Who Disparage It” (July 9)? If viewers of the O.J. Simpson trial have come to believe that criminal defense lawyers are out to hide the truth, suppress and circumvent the facts, confuse and fool jurors, create frivolous theories, and argue the absurd, it is because they have concluded that the Dream Team consistently engages in such machinations, not because they have naively accepted ex cathedra pronouncements from TV pundits. Res ipsa loquitur , Mr. Weitzman!

While the monetary cost of the Simpson trial has been horrendous, the greatest cost is the loss of the naivete we have for the fairness of the judicial system, regardless of a defendant’s ability to pay.

The prosecution has rested--now if only the rest of us could (July 7).

After observing the events of the first day of defense testimony (July 10), I concede that the Dream Team has done a great job of convincing the entire Simpson family that O.J. is innocent.

Based on the amount of time each defense witness is on the stand, and the apparent self-promotion of some of the witnesses, it appears that Andy Warhol was right!
