Page, Formerly Coach of Nordiques, Is Fifth Calgary Coach in Five Years

Pierre Page, away from an NHL bench for a season, came back to it Monday when he was named coach of the Calgary Flames. Page, 47, who had been coach and general manager of the Quebec Nordiques until he was fired in May 1994, was a scout for the Toronto Maple Leafs last season. Page becomes Calgary’s fifth coach in five years and replaces Dave King.

The Buffalo Sabres have called a news conference, presumably to announce that Hartford Whaler assistant Ted Nolan will be named coach, replacing John Muckler, who relinquished coaching duties to be full-time general manager.

A judge in Winnipeg approved a request from an activist group that could stall construction of a new arena for the Jets. A summons against the city of Winnipeg and a building contractor allege arena construction is proceeding without an environmental license.

Football

Kyle Brady, from Penn State and the No. 1 draft pick of the New York Jets, agreed to a four-year, $5.1-million contract, highest ever paid to a rookie tight end.

First-round pick Tony Boselli sprained his left knee during Jacksonville Jaguar workouts. He will be examined again today.

Second-round draft choice Kordell Stewart, from Colorado, has agreed to a $1.85-million contract with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Defensive lineman Steve Emtman is a free agent after clearing waivers, and the Indianapolis Colts are still interested in the former No. 1 pick they released when he declined to renegotiate his contract. Seattle and expansion Carolina also have expressed interest.

Marcel Price, 18, a Northwestern player home in Nashville, Tenn., for the summer, died after being shot in the chest by a former high school teammate who apparently was playing with a gun. Ohmar Deshawn Braden, 19, was arrested, charged with criminal homicide in the shooting and released on bond.

California guard Frank Beede and reserve tight end Jabari Simmons were dismissed from the team for breaking team rules.

A federal judge in Santa Ana denied a request from Darryl Henley to go free on bail, saying the former Ram cornerback is still a flight risk while he awaits a possible new trial on drug trafficking charges. Henley was seeking to play for the Rams this season. . . . Domestic battery charges against Chicago Bull star Scottie Pippen were dropped after his former fiancee failed to appear for the trial in Waukegan, Ill.

Minnesota Coach Clem Haskins, 52, was released from a hospital after undergoing heart angioplasty to expand his coronary arteries. . . . Details of Cincinnati Coach Bob Huggins’ new 10-year contract show he will earn about $420,000 annually in salary, bonuses and annuities and up to $250,000 extra if the Bearcats win the NCAA championship. . . . Georgia Tech recruit Stephon Marbury scored 20 points as the United States beat France, 65-62, in the quarterfinals of the Junior World Championships in Athens.

Tom Lehman, winner of one PGA event this year, joined Fred Couples, Fuzzy Zoeller and Hale Irwin as Americans who have withdrawn from the British Open. . . . Newport Beach Country Club will play host to Orange County’s Senior PGA Tour event, the Toshiba Senior Classic, next March. Mesa Verde played host to the inaugural event last March.

Two weeks after storming off the court at Wimbledon, Jeff Tarango returned to competition, playing a doubles match at the Legg Mason Tennis Classic in Washington, D.C. . . . British track and field officials, angry that world champion hurdler Colin Jackson pulled out of an event in Birmingham, England, on Saturday only to compete elsewhere the next day, left him off the team for next month’s World Championships in Sweden. They said he could be reinstated if he proves his “competitive fitness.”
