Magic, Bulls, Spurs Among Clippers’ Opponents at Pond

The Clippers released their 1995-96 schedule Thursday, which includes 10 games at The Pond of Anaheim.

The Clippers play host to Orlando in the first game at The Pond, an exhibition Oct. 13. The first regular-season game is Nov. 16 against Vancouver. Chicago, Utah, Seattle, Portland, San Antonio, Dallas and Golden State also will visit Anaheim in the regular season.

The complete schedule (all games 7:30 p.m. unless indicated):

Oct. 13 vs. Orlando (exhibition); Oct. 25 Phoenix (exhibition); Nov. 16 vs. Vancouver; Dec. 2 vs. Chicago; Jan. 21 vs. Utah, 6 p.m.; Jan. 27 vs. Seattle; Feb. 17 vs. Portland; Feb. 27 vs. San Antonio; March 14 vs. Dallas; April 11 vs. Golden State.

Cal State Fullerton finished ahead of its Big West Conference rivals for the second year in a row in the Sears Directors’ Cup standings of team finishes in national championship competition.

The Titans finished with 219 points, 60th among all Division I universities. Fullerton’s NCAA baseball championship along with fifth-place finishes nationally by the softball team and the men’s soccer team led the way.

Nevada Las Vegas was next among Big West schools, finishing 75th with 177 points. Long Beach State ranked 91st with 141.5. UC Irvine was 169th with 49 points.

Stanford, which won five national championships, was first, followed by North Carolina and UCLA. Fullerton was 46th in the same rankings a year ago.

Points are awarded on the basis of NCAA competition in 20 core sports for men and women.

Terry Noe of Fullerton lost to Dean Overturf of Dallas, 1 up, and was eliminated in the second round of match play at the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships at the 6,807-yard, par-71 Stow Acres Country Club in Stow, Mass.

Mike D’Alessandro, who was the assistant men’s volleyball coach at Long Beach State, was named head coach of Golden West’s men’s volleyball team, the college announced.

As an assistant coach at Long Beach for the past seven years, D’Alessandro, 35, has been part of a 157-61 record and reached the NCAA Championship title match in 1990 and 1991, winning the national title in 1991.

Previously, he worked as an assistant at Orange Coast College and Newport Harbor High. At Orange Coast, he helped the Pirates to a 23-0 record and at Newport Harbor, worked with the boys’ and girls’ teams, and both teams won Southern Section Championships.

Fullerton College running back Jeff Willis has signed a letter of intent to play football at East Tennessee State, his mother, Marie, said.

Willis, a running back, played the last two seasons at Fullerton. He helped Sunny Hills High win the Southern Section Division VII championship in 1992.
