Nicole Ochoa, a former softball player at Thousand Oaks High who started 97 games for Cal State Long Beach the past two seasons, has decided to transfer to UCLA.

The four-time All-Marmonte League selection said she had always wanted to play for the Bruins, who won the 1995 Women’s College World Series, and said she was unfulfilled at Long Beach State, which finished 32-31 last season.

“It wasn’t the kind of athletic program or academic school I was looking for,” Ochoa said. “I wasn’t challenged, and I want to challenge myself.”

As a freshman in 1994, Ochoa, an outfielder, batted .302 with four home runs and 26 runs batted in while appearing in all 58 games, starting 56.

But her average dipped to .270 with only one home run and 13 RBIs in 1995, when she started 15 fewer games and was hampered by a hamstring injury.

“I had a terrible season and I was definitely not happy,” Ochoa said. “I want a coach who will get the most out of me.”

Ochoa wasn’t the only unhappy 49er. Ochoa said shortstop Nina Lindenberg, a .324 hitter, is also transferring.

Second baseman Olga Delgado, pitcher Ashley Harmon and pitcher/first baseman Lise Delligatta quit during the season.

Ochoa said she was released from her scholarship at Long Beach State, which makes her eligible to play next season. UCLA has not promised her any financial assistance, but the Bruins have openings in the outfield.

“They said I would have a really good chance because they lost a lot of players and they want some experienced players,” Ochoa said.

“It’s a great school with a great atmosphere. It’s perfect for me.”
