VOLUNTEERS : A Banner Occasion

Share

More than two dozen community volunteers turned their artistic talents to decorating the construction site of Santa Monica’s new Co-Opportunity market last week. The member-owned store has been in Santa Monica for more than 20 years and is moving to larger digs. The new 9,100-square-foot store will be twice the size of the current market at 1530 Broadway. It is scheduled to open this fall.

Children and adults from Heal the Bay, St. Joseph Center for the homeless, the Westside Food Bank and other organizations painted a 60-foot-long canvas banner with logos and slogans to celebrate the project. The brightly colored banner was hung along the fence surrounding the construction site at the corner of Broadway and 16th Street. As part of a social pledge made by the natural food grocer, the market donates 3 cents to Heal the Bay each time a customer helps save the environment by supplying their own carry-home bag.
