Research Funding at UCI Rises for 12th Straight Year : Education: The university received $125 million from outside sources during the 1994-95 school year.

For the 12th consecutive year, funding from outside sources for research at UC Irvine has exceeded the total of the previous year, university officials said Tuesday.

Outside funding--contracts and grants from local, state, federal and other sources--rose 17% to $125 million during the 1994-95 school year. About half of the funding, $62.5 million, went to the university’s medical school, which saw a 26% increase from the 1993-94 school year.

“We are very pleased with these totals, and the credit goes to our many investigators who have given many hours to both their work and the process of application,” said Tom Cesario, dean of the College of Medicine, in a prepared statement. “This is a sign of the growth and success of UCI and the College of Medicine.”

Federal agencies showing the greatest increases in funding to UCI were the U.S. Department of Education, which raised its funding by 65% to $2 million, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, which boosted its total 46% to $4 million.

The state also increased its funding by 173%, contributing $5.6 million to the university.

“The increased funding reflects the excellence of our faculty’s research,” said Frances Leslie, UCI’s associate vice chancellor for research. “We are a growing campus which is successful in recruiting top-notch faculty who do high quality research in areas of state and national need.”
