ANAHEIM : Funds for Charities Approved by Council

A Salvation Army youth outreach program, the Boys and Girls Club and the Anaheim Family YMCA are among the charities that will receive city funding this year under a plan approved this week by the City Council.

Acting on recommendations of the city Community Services Board, the council Tuesday voted unanimously to provide nearly $129,000 to nine local nonprofit groups.

The largest sum, $30,000, was allotted to the Anaheim Interfaith Shelter.

Council members postponed action, however, on a request by the board to authorize an additional $71,000 in funding for community groups.

Mayor Tom Daly said the council will not have “a proper context” to make a decision on the additional funds until the state budget is approved and its impact on Anaheim is analyzed.

The board recommends that, should the council allot the extra money, $10,000 be earmarked for the financially ailing Anaheim Museum, whose operation the city has taken over.

Other agencies recommended for financial aid include the Crippled Children’s Society, the Dayle McIntosh Center for the Disabled and the Women’s Transitional Living Center.

When considering funding requests, the board gave preference to Anaheim-based agencies that provide services for youth, the elderly and disadvantaged families.
