SURFING : Mother’s Comeback Stays on Track
Kim Mearig, 31-year-old mother of two who came out of retirement to compete in the Op Pro Surfing Championship, advanced to the quarterfinals Thursday at Huntington Beach.
Mearig, a two-time Op Pro champion, finished first in both of her heats. She scored 17.77 points in the second-round trial heat and 23.20 points in the first round of the main event. Still, she was not happy with her surfing.
“I think I was pretty lucky out there,” Mearig said. “I’m not feeling good about my surfing right now. I felt better on Monday.”
