San Clemente’s Adam Johnson and partner Jose Loiola of Brazil fell into the losers’ bracket of the $100,000 Seal Beach Open beach volleyball tournament Friday after losing a 17-15 overtime match to Kevin Martin and David Swatik in the third round.

Johnson and Loiola, who are seeded third, remain alive in the three-day, double-elimination tournament and will play Dain Blanton, who played at Laguna Beach High, and partner Ian Clark today.

None of the other top five seeded teams lost a match, including second-seeded Karch Kiraly and Kent Steffes, who reunited last week in Milwaukee to finish third. Steffes had been out since April because of shoulder surgery.

Top-seeded Mike Dodd and Mike Whitmarsh easily advanced through the winners’ bracket with two victories, including a 15-6 victory over Matt Unger and Brian Gatzke in the third round.

Dodd and Whitmarsh will be trying for their fourth consecutive Seal Beach Open title.

Scott Ayakatubby, who played most of the season with Kiraly, was seeded fourth with Randy Stoklos, and the pair, which finished fourth last week, also advanced easily.

San Diego’s Ricci Luyties played with Brent Frohoff of Manhattan Beach for the first time this season, replacing Eric Fonoimoana, who teamed with Frohoff’s former partner, Rob Heidger.
