Mats Wilander, once the world’s No. 1-ranked tennis player, pulled off another surprise in the Canadian Open, beating fourth-seeded Yvgeny Kafelnikov, 7-5, 7-6 (7-4), in their quarterfinal match in Montreal.

The victory put Wilander into his first semifinal since last year’s U.S. Clay Court championships, against top-seeded Andre Agassi, who struggled to a 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 victory over unseeded MaliVai Washington.

In the other semifinal, second-seeded Pete Sampras, who defeated Michael Stich, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, will meet 12th-seeded Thomas Enqvist, who upset third-seeded Michael Chang, 6-3, 6-4.

Steffi Graf and Arantxa Sanchez Vicario won in straight sets at the Citizen Cup in Hamburg, Germany, to set up a rematch of last year’s final that was overshadowed by the stabbing of Monica Seles.

Graf ousted Jana Novotna, 6-3, 6-3, while Sanchez Vicario routed Sabine Hack, 6-1, 6-1.

College Football

Carl Galmon, who forced the Sugar Bowl Committee to integrate more than 20 years ago, has renewed his fight, claiming the bowl has done little since then to diversify its membership.

Although the organization’s current director is black, there are no women and only eight blacks on the 99-member committee which coordinates the Sugar Bowl football game and related events.

Galmon said the issue would come up during the Southern Christian Leadership Conference’s convention in New Orleans July 30-Aug. 2.
