Northridge : Fashion Center Will Reopen With a Bang

Share

Northridge Fashion Center officially opens tonight after 18 months of earthquake repairs, becoming the latest Valley landmark to return to normal operations since the Jan. 17, 1994, temblor rocked the region.

The mall’s buckled parking levels, shattered store windows and fractured facades became a prominent symbol of the quake’s destruction.

Organizers hope to replace that image with scenes of celebrities, musical performances and fireworks from the grand opening ceremony tonight.

The event will start at 7:30 p.m. atop the Tampa Avenue parking terrace. Activities will include a fireworks display, laser lights and live musical performances by the 5th Dimension’s Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr. as well as Northridge’s own Jeffrey Osborne.

Actor Jay Thomas will host the event. Scheduled guest appearances range from famed “Late Show With David Letterman” shopkeepers Mujibur Rahman and Sirajul Islam to Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan and City Councilman Hal Bernson.

Admission is free. Northridge Fashion Center is located in the 9300 block of Tampa Avenue.
