FOR THE KIDS : Mall Hosts Concerts, Activities This Weekend : Plenty of children’s entertainers will take the stage during the three-day event.

For the 10th straight year, The Oaks Mall is throwing its Kid’s World celebration.

This weekend’s three-day extravaganza features concerts and a ton of kid activities. It’s also a chance to see some well-known family entertainers for free and browse 40 booths featuring everything from puppet shows about fire safety to cookie decorating.

The wacky musical trio The Happy Crowd will hit the stage twice Saturday--at 1 and 3 p.m. The group has carved out a following by appearing at the OK (Oaks Kids) Club, a weekly show the mall puts on for children.

“Every time they perform, tons of people come,” said Diane Boyd, spokeswoman for the mall. “They are really, really good.” Their music touches on the environment, friendship and individuality, all in a funny way. One member dons a different hat after each song.

Since the performers got together five years ago, they’ve recorded two albums. A couple of their songs have climbed the charts on the kids station, Radio AAHS, broadcast nationally by the Children’s Satellite Network.

Caren Glasser, another familiar face on the local children’s entertainment circuit, will pump out her high-energy songs at the mall Saturday during two shows--noon and 2 p.m.

Glasser, who sings on the Kid Rhino Records label, has recorded three albums that appeal to the 2- to 12-year-old set. Her music is upbeat, sort of soft-rock for kids, with a warm and fuzzy feel-good-about-yourself message.

On Friday, Flights of Fantasy Story Theater takes the stage at 3 and 5 p.m. Using masks, pantomime, costumes and dancing, the duo of Lorrie Oshatz and Royce Herron weaves folk tales and fables. At 6:30 p.m. it’s a line-dancing show by Thousand Oaks area youths who make up the group SADDLS.

Sunday’s lineup includes Beckwith & Towner at 1 and 3 p.m. (The 3 p.m. show has Mindy Brown, who signs music for the deaf.) Mark Beckwith and Mark Towner sing and clown around. Beckwith has two albums out that have gotten air time on Radio AAHS, and he has appeared on the Nickelodeon channel. Towner hosts the Saturday show “Kids View” on KABC-TV.

At 2 p.m., after Beckwith & Towner, the Ronald McDonald Show takes over.

Throughout the three days, stores and organizations will have booths set up with activities for kids, such as making jewelry and bookmarks and petting animals.

A kid’s “safety zone” will be set up by local police and fire departments--it will feature safety exhibits, local characters Pluggie and McGruff, puppet shows, and “kid printing” by the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department. Kids also can turn in their old toothbrushes and pick up new ones at the Santa Barbara/Ventura County Dental Assn. booth.

If you need another reason to cruise the mall with the kids, here’s one: The gigantic sand sculpture that has had people gaping since last spring is still gracing the mall’s center.

The tower of sand was supposed to come down in August, but it’ll be there until November. For the record, the work is billed as the world’s tallest indoor sand sculpture.

Here’s a cool idea: Kids who visit the Ventura County Gull Wings Children’s Museum Saturday afternoon will have a chance to make real ice cream--and eat it, too.

The museum, at 418 W. 4th St. in Oxnard, provides a special craft for kids every Saturday at 2 p.m., and this week, volunteer Marian Jessup will show them how to make ice cream in a matter of minutes. Really.

To participate, parents need to call the museum at 483-3005 to make a reservation for their children. The cost is $1, in addition to the admission charge of $3 for adults, $2 for kids 2 to 12, and free for those 2 years and under.
