A House task force controlled by Republicans dismissed a challenge to Democratic Rep. Charlie Rose’s election Thursday. But the panel also voted along party lines to refer accusations of voter fraud in North Carolina’s 7th district to the Justice Department.

After less than 20 minutes of discussion, the three-member task force of the House Oversight Committee voted unanimously to dismiss the challenge mounted by Republican Robert Anderson of Fayetteville, N.C., who lost the November election to the incumbent Rose by more than 3,800 votes.

Task force members said they were relying on a review by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation. The review found that vote irregularities in Robeson County were isolated and insufficient to change the election’s outcome.

Anderson, who attended Thursday’s brief session, had alleged that, among other violations, hundreds of voters were added illegally to the county’s rolls after the registration deadline passed.

Rose said in a brief statement that he was satisfied with what he called the panel’s “exhaustive” inquiry and ultimate decision in his favor.

Anderson said he was happy the case was being referred, even though the Justice Department may decide not to pursue it.
