Tennis Field Is OK, Magic’s Game Isn’t
I couldn’t disagree more with Allan Malamud’s comment [Aug. 1] disparaging the field in the Infiniti Open at UCLA. With Jimmy Connors, Goran Ivanisevic and Thomas Enqvist, the tournament has an interesting mix of the past, present and future of tennis. Agassi and Becker both played last year. Sampras and Chang played the previous year. I went to a few of the matches this week and found the tennis to be exciting and at a very high level.

I’m sure this won’t get printed because of the media’s reluctance to get on Magic Johnson’s bad side. Nevertheless, his 1995 Mid-summer Night’s All-Star game was a major disappointment.
After driving the extra 30 miles from Canoga Park to Anaheim (instead of the originally scheduled Forum), we learned that the reason for attending--Magic Johnson--wasn’t even going to be in the building. We spent $10 for a program listing all the all-stars who would play. Only six or so of the 20 all-stars “confirmed as of June 15” (according to the print ad) decided to show. Instead, it was a collection of players with L.A. roots who had a day off from summer league.
Needless to say, this midsummer’s nightmare was a big letdown. I won’t be wasting my money on another one.
