Seles’ Weighty Issue Shouldn’t Be a Factor
Beginning with the headline, “Now There’s More of Monica to Love,” the July 30 article on Monica Seles’ exhibition match offends readers. Is this all that is pertinent to women’s sports, or women in general? How absolutely degrading.
Who cares about how she looked, except maybe the author? Is this a fashion magazine or a sports page? Please! Why doesn’t the article on the Angels’ Jim Abbott make any mention of his hair tint or style, or the article on the Dodgers’ Eric Karros talk about whether he has gained or lost a few pounds since last season?
To make matters worse, the article was written by a woman. When Julie Cart alluded to this match nearing the epic proportions of a Miss America pageant, she had no idea how these words came so close to the truth. Whoever says women have come far obviously doesn’t read the sports section.
