Camarillo resident Harvey M. Bernstein, a swap meet salesman who spent the last 14 years hawking kitchen wares at Southern California swap meets with his wife, Ruth, died Saturday. He was 78.

“He was such a loved man,” Ruth said, “so well-liked by everyone.”

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Dec. 22, 1916, Bernstein moved to Southern California in 1952. A real estate salesman, Bernstein and his family lived in the San Fernando Valley and later Marina Del Rey for 20 years.

Three years ago, Bernstein and his wife moved to Camarillo. Every weekend the couple would attend swap meets to sell small kitchen appliances.

“He enjoyed people and he always enjoyed selling,” Ruth Bernstein said. “He was the high-pressure [salesman], and I was the laid-back [saleswoman]. We both did well at it . . . I’m going to miss him an awful lot.”

Bernstein is survived by his wife of more than 54 years, his son David Bernstein of Lafayette, Calif., daughter Marscia and son-in-law Roy Buford of Calabasas, and five grandchildren.

Arrangements are under the direction of Pierce Brothers Griffin Mortuary, Camarillo.
