After scoring 12 runs on 20 hits two nights earlier and having nothing to show for it, the San Diego Padres made sure this time.

Archi Cianfrocco tied a career high with six RBIs, including a three-run home run, as the Padres beat the Colorado Rockies, 16-8, Sunday to salvage the final game of a three-game series at Denver.

San Diego had 19 hits, including four homers.

“I’ve had a long career of mastering no positions,” said Cianfrocco, who was promoted from triple-A Las Vegas July 15 and had six RBIs against Atlanta July 21. “I’m just glad to be up and getting a chance to play.”

Phil Plantier, who tied a career best with four hits and drove in three runs, Ken Caminiti and Brad Ausmus also homered.

Jayhawk Owens homered twice for the Rockies and established a career high with four hits. Joe Girardi and Eric Young also connected for Colorado, which had won three in a row.

Dante Bichette, who had hit home runs in five consecutive games for the Rockies, did not hit another but extended his hitting streak to 18 games. Young has hit in 16 in a row.

Rookie Glenn Dishman (3-4) pitched six innings for the victory.

New York 7, Florida 3--The Marlins’ longest winning streak ended at eight games when Jeff Kent and Rico Brogna hit home runs at New York to help the Mets end a five-game losing streak.

Brogna’s solo home run put the Mets ahead, 2-1, in the fifth. Kent’s three-run homer came during a five-run sixth.

Bobby Jones (7-8), Jerry DiPoto and John Franco combined on a five-hitter. Pat Rapp (5-7) took the loss.

Cincinnati 6-2, Philadelphia 1-1--Reggie Sanders’ bases-loaded single in the 10th inning carried the Reds to a victory in the second game and a doubleheader sweep of the Phillies at Cincinnati.

The Reds won the first game behind Jeff Branson’s three-run homer and Pete Schourek’s three-hitter.

The Phillies tied the second game in the eighth inning on second baseman Bret Boone’s throwing error, but Cincinnati rallied against Heathcliff Slocumb (2-3) to improve to 9-1 in extra innings. Mike Jackson (5-0) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.

Schourek (12-5) struck out seven and retired the last 15 batters.

Montreal 6, Atlanta 2--Rookie Carlos Perez pitched a seven-hitter at Montreal to help the Expos end a five-game losing streak.

The Expos also ended Atlanta’s four-game winning streak as Mike Lansing’s two-run homer capped a five-run first inning against Steve Avery (4-8).

Perez (10-3) improved to 9-1 with a 1.91 earned-run average at Olympic Stadium.

Avery, who retired 17 consecutive batters after Lansing’s homer before leaving in the seventh, is 0-3 with three no-decisions since his last victory June 8.

Marquis Grissom again hit well against his old team, doubling twice in four at-bats and raising his average to .739 this season at Olympic Stadium.

St. Louis 4, Chicago 3--John Mabry faked a bunt, then singled through a drawn-in infield in the 13th inning as the Cardinals won for only the second time in 10 games and avoided a three-game sweep at St. Louis.

Mabry, a rookie, had a career-best four hits for the Cardinals. Ramon Caraballo walked to start the 13th and Bernard Gilkey singled for his third hit before Mabry singled up the middle off Chris Nabholz (0-1).

Jeff Parrett (3-3) worked a scoreless 13th inning for the Cardinals.

Pittsburgh 6, Houston 3--Jay Bell hit two home runs and the Pirates, usually ineffective against left-handers, ended Mike Hampton’s six-game winning streak by beating the Astros at Pittsburgh.

Pirates rookie right-hander Esteban Loaiza (7-5) outpitched Hampton. The Pirates are 9-20 against left-handers.

Houston’s Orlando Miller homered twice.
