BASEBALL DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJOR LEAGUES : Indians Extend Martinez’s Contract

Dennis Martinez agreed to a one-year contract that will keep him in Cleveland for the 1996 season, his 20th in the major leagues.

He signed a two-year, $9-million deal in 1993 with a $4.125-million option for the ’96 season. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed, but it will supersede the earlier contract.

The 40-year-old right-hander is 9-2 this season with a 2.82 earned-run average that ranks among the AL leaders. He has lasted six or more innings in 16 consecutive starts and 18 of 19 this season.

Florida Marlin pitcher Bobby Witt was traded to the Texas Rangers for two players to be determined.

The 31-year-old right-hander is 2-7 with a 3.90 ERA in 19 starts this season and has a 1.96 ERA since the all-star break. The Marlins scored 17 runs in his two victories but only 21 in his other 17 starts.

Witt won 68 games with the Rangers from 1986 to 1992 and was sent to Oakland with two other players when Texas acquired Jose Canseco.

Witt’s roster spot was filled by left-hander Buddy Groom, who came from Detroit on Monday, and got the win Tuesday.

Utility infielder Mariano Duncan, who hit .345 with 10 hits and two RBIs in the 1993 World Series, was released by Philadelphia.

Duncan, 32, was claimed on waivers by his former team, the NL Central Division-leading Cincinnati Reds. The Phillies acquired infielder Brian Koelling from double-A Chattanooga as compensation.

The Phillies also put right-hander Bobby Munoz and reserve outfielder Tony Longmire on the 15-day disabled list. Longmire has a sore left wrist and Munoz is sidelined because of elbow problems.

The Phillies reactivated outfielder Gary Varsho from the disabled list and recalled infielder Kevin Jordan and right-hander Paul Fletcher from triple-A Scranton-Wilkes Barre.

First baseman Mark McGwire of the Oakland A’s has missed the last three games because of a sore lower back after being activated from the disabled list last Wednesday.
