BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : ANGELS : Infield Has a New Look

Share

With shortstop Gary DiSarcina sidelined for the rest of the regular season and third baseman Tony Phillips serving a three-game suspension, first baseman J.T. Snow hardly recognized the Angel infield.

“I looked around and Damion [Easley] wasn’t to my right,” Snow said. “DiSarcina wasn’t at short and Tony wasn’t at third.

“I’m the Lone Ranger out there.”

Phillips will return tonight. Easley, who moved from second to shortstop to replace DiSarcina, and new second baseman Chico Lind probably will form the middle of the infield for the rest of the season.

In a related move, recently signed infielder Dick Schofield was sent to Mesa, Ariz., to begin workouts.

A fan at Kauffman Stadium robbed Kansas City’s Phil Hiatt of a three-run homer off Mark Langston. Tim Salmon appeared to have a play on Hiatt’s drive down the right-field line in the sixth inning, but a fan reached over and swiped the ball away from Salmon at the last moment.

First base umpire Larry McCoy at first signaled a home run but later changed his call and Hiatt was given a ground-rule double with Gary Gaetti scoring and Greg Gagne forced to hold at third base.

“My argument was that the umpire has already ruled that the ball was not out of the park, and if it was fair, then Gagne should have scored,” Kansas City Manager Bob Boone said.
