The first low-income senior housing project built in Carson in 15 years opened last week to rave reviews from city officials and new residents.
And who can argue with them? For $390 to $446 a month, senior citizens who qualify can move into the 91-unit Avalon Courtyard.
The Spanish-style complex was built by a developer in partnership with the Carson Redevelopment Agency, which invested $5 million and will subsidize rents.
“It’s just gorgeous,” agency manager Adolfo Reyes said of the Avalon Boulevard complex.
“The community wins because we removed blight from a rundown area and replaced it with not only a nice facility but one that people can be proud to live in.”
Reyes said units are still available to low- and moderate-income seniors. Now, the age limitation is 62, but city officials hope to lower the requirement to 55.
