A last-minute deal has saved two libraries from closing.

The City Council this week ratified an agreement with Orange County that waives rent on the city-owned buildings in exchange for limited library service.

In June, the city arranged with the county’s public library system to preserve two of Garden Grove’s libraries that were slated for closure because of budget cuts. The Chapman and West Garden Grove branches remained open for two days of service a week.

The city, in return, agreed to waive rent on the two branches, as well as the regional branch in Garden Grove, forfeiting a total of $70,000 in rent annually. The city also agreed to seek volunteers to help extend the operating hours of the two local branches.
