AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : Johnson Whiffs Every Hitter at Least Once

Randy Johnson, pitching for the first time since Aug. 1 because of a stiff shoulder, struck out every Royal hitter at least once Friday night while leading Seattle to its sixth consecutive victory, 2-1, at Kansas City.

Johnson (12-2) fanned 11 in seven innings, gave up three singles, went over 200 strikeouts for the fifth season in a row and won in Kauffman Stadium for the first time in six starts.

“His shoulder looked pretty good to me,” Kansas City Manager Bob Boone said of Johnson. “All you can do is say, ‘Wow, nice pitching.’ ”

Johnson also stayed on track to erase Nolan Ryan’s record of 11.48 strikeouts per nine innings. The left-handed pitcher is striking out almost 13 per game. It was the 11th time in 21 starts that he’s struck out 10 or more.

Cleveland 5, New York 4--Kenny Lofton’s RBI double in the 11th inning led the Indians to their third come-from-behind victory in the last two days over the Yankees at New York.

Cleveland, which took a doubleheader Thursday, has won 18 games in its final at-bat and eight games in which it trailed after eight innings.

Alvaro Espinoza opened the 11th with his third hit of the game and was sacrificed to second by Sandy Alomar before Steve Howe replaced John Wetteland (1-3). Lofton then doubled into the right-field corner.

Julian Tavarez (7-1), the fifth of six Indians pitchers, got the final two outs in the 10th. Jose Mesa earned his 33rd save in 33 chances with a perfect 11th.

Boston 5, Baltimore 4--Pinch-runner Juan Bell stumbled home on Lee Tinsley’s 12th-inning double as the Red Sox won at Boston, extending their winning streak to nine games.

Baltimore, which lost for the fourth time in its last give games, trails East-leading Boston by 12 games.

Milwaukee 5, Detroit 4--Darryl Hamilton hit a grand slam in the fourth inning to lead the Brewers at Milwaukee on a day in which Kirk Gibson announced his retirement.

Hamilton’s third homer in 293 at-bats came off Detroit’s Mike Moore (5-12), who lost his sixth consecutive start.

Toronto 14, Texas 5--Ed Sprague drove in four runs as the Blue Jays routed the Rangers at Arlington, Tex.

Rookie Ed Hurtado, who won his first major league start on July 21 against Seattle, improved to 4-1. He held Texas scoreless until the sixth inning when Mickey Tettleton hit a three-run homer.

Chicago 13, Oakland 5--Tim Raines and Lyle Mouton each hit home runs to help the White Sox win at Chicago.
