From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Blistering heat claimed two lives in Chicago over the weekend, and the death toll could rise from temperatures that soared near 100 degrees, officials said. Chicago police and health officials were dispatched to city neighborhoods to check on the elderly, and about 70 cooling centers were opened in an effort to prevent a repeat of the 500 deaths that were linked to a more intense hot spell in July.
