3 Killed in Car Crashes on I-5

Two separate car collisions on the Golden State Freeway left three people dead this weekend, California Highway Patrol officers said.

The first occurred about 1:30 p.m. Sunday when 80-year-old Arnold Radike of Templeton drove onto the wrong side of the freeway near Lake Hughes, sideswiped two cars and hit one vehicle head on, police said. Radike was the only person who died in that accident, said CHP Officer Wendy Moore.

Just after midnight, a car carrying two people, whom authorities believe were husband and wife, experienced mechanical trouble in the third lane near the McBean Parkway exit.

A large truck crashed into the stalled car, starting a fire, which the truck driver put out, Moore said, but the two occupants had died. Their names were withheld pending notification of their relatives.
