San Francisco 49er fullback William Floyd sprained right knee ligaments during contact drills. The injury likely will keep Floyd out of the team’s Sept. 3 opener at New Orleans. In a best-case scenario, Floyd will be sidelined about three weeks, 49er Coach George Seifert said. . . . Harry Boatswain, the first lineman and fourth overall pick in February’s expansion draft, was one of eight players waived by Carolina. Also, running back Tony Smith was placed on injured reserve. . . . Tampa Bay wide receiver Alvin Harper ran without difficulty on his injured left knee and foot for the first time since he sprained them Aug. 5. . . . Third-year tight end Frank Wycheck was released by the Washington Redskins.
