Fair Features Variety of Traditional Music : There’s home-grown talent and different settings for it, including Porker Flat, where the Top 40 will precede the chili cook-off.

Country music and entertainment continues at the Ventura County Fair through Aug. 27. Here’s a rundown on where and when to catch some of our home-grown talent.

The hot local headliners are being featured in two shows, 7 and 9 p.m., on the Miller Stage (formerly called the Ventura Station stage). On Tuesday, Buck Page and Riders of Purple Sage will treat you to humor and harmonies, along with classic Western cowboy songs like “Don’t Fence Me In.” On Wednesday, look for the Rhythm Rangers to rock the stage with country and R&B; originals, including “Aces and Eights” and “Alaska Boogie.”

Tonight on the Pepsi Stage, it’s Steppenwolf meets Nashville when Lone Wolf plays at 8:30 p.m. The Testifiers, with Acousticats member Cyrus Clarke, add an acoustic spin at 11 a.m. and noon on Friday. The Pepsi Stage continues to support live music Tuesday when the Old Time Fiddlers rosin their bows for bluegrass tunes at 5 p.m. On Aug. 25 from 5 to 7 p.m., Sweet Country will offer its brand of good old traditional country music.

And at 11:30 a.m. Aug. 26 over at Porker Flat, Cross Country will warm you outside with upbeat Top 40 country songs before the chili cook-off at noon takes care of your innards.

These concerts are included in admission to the fair: $6 adults, $3 for seniors age 55 and older and kids ages 6 to 12. The events take place at Seaside Park, 10 W. Harbor Blvd. in Ventura. For more information, call 648-3376.

In addition to performing at the fair on Wednesday, the Rhythm Rangers take the stage Friday at C. J. Nelson’s for lots of high energy line-dance and two-step music without a cover charge. On Saturday, they’ll play 8 to 11 p.m. for the popular monthly smoke-and-alcohol-free family dance at the Camarillo Community Center, 1605 E. Burnley St. Dave Howells teaches at 7 p.m. Admission is $5 for adults and $2.50 for youth. For details, call 482-1996.

Thunder deejay Bob Allen will auction off country celebrity memorabilia donated for a benefit for the Institute of Equestrian Therapy, noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks. Here’s your chance to snag a T-shirt from Clint Black. The Rhythm Rangers will provide music, and the club’s instructors, Jennie and Cliff, will teach throughout the afternoon. Popular Valley-based singer Geary Hanley brings his band to C. J. Nelson’s on Saturday night for what is probably his first formal club date in Ventura County. That’s because he’s been entertaining crowds at Disneyland, Knott’s Berry Farm, Farm Aid, the Palomino Club, Crazy Horse Saloon, the Las Vegas-Reno circuit and television shows including Austin City Limits and Nashville Now.

I caught Hanley’s act recently. His upbeat music is great for both line dancing and giddyap two-steps. He describes the band as “contemporary” with a repertoire ranging from traditional and new country to rock-a-billy and classic rock ‘n’ roll.

Hanley tries to include three originals from his two albums in each performance. And as for his singing--Hanley could be the poster-guy for easy-listening country vocals.
