Is This a Bad Sign? Tyson at 220, Same Weight as Douglas Fight

Before an audience of about 3,000 in the MGM Grand Garden arena Thursday, Mike Tyson officially weighed in at 220 pounds for Saturday’s fight against Peter McNeeley, Tyson’s first bout in four years.

This is the heaviest Tyson has come into a fight since he weighed 220 before his knockout loss to Buster Douglas in February 1990. In his last fight, in June 1991, Tyson weighed 216 in a decision victory over Razor Ruddock.

According to his handlers, under the nutritional and conditioning care of Carlos Blackwell, Tyson basically has been at weight since training began months ago, a far departure from the between-fight blow-ups he used to go through.

“Mike’s last five or six fights before he went in [to jail], Mike was losing 30 pounds before each fight,” said co-manager Rory Holloway. “He would have to go in and spend his whole training camp losing weight.”

McNeeley weighed in at 224 pounds.
