Golf Has a Specialized Audience--and PGA Just Couldn’t Find It

Do I have this right? We L.A. sports fans are taking heat from sportswriters because the PGA tournament is not a sellout? It’s August, over 100 degrees outside and you think I should pay big bucks to spend the day watching guys in bad pants play golf?
Talk about unclear on the concept. You have all the golf people willing to do that. The rest of us are way too busy. Me, I’ve got to rearrange the sock drawer.

Pet Peeve No. 246: the seriousness with which the game of golf takes itself. When I listened to the stuffy, stodgy announcing at this past weekend’s PGA tournament, it was as exciting as the running commentary at an autopsy.
I’d especially like to thank the announcers for telling me about 100 times each broadcast what a great “golf” shot I just saw. Really? I thought I was watching wrestling. How often do you hear of a great football run, hockey check, basketball dunk, boxing punch, baseball hit, etc.?
It really is only a game, not a religion. And, trust me, most of us are bright enough to figure out what we are watching.

Until recently, I thought the only thing duller than watching a baseball game was watching a doubleheader. Then I watched the PGA at Riviera.
Will you next feature cricket, lawn bowling and croquet as exciting spectator sports?

The worst thing about the PGA Championship being played in the L.A. area was that Payne Stewart didn’t have any home team colors to wear.
