COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : At Least No One Was Seriously Hurt

Share

The highlight of Saturday’s UCLA scrimmage at the Rose Bowl came midway through the third quarter after linebacker Donnie Edwards, hit in the lower portion of his right leg, went down.

After a few agonizing moments, Edwards got up.

Bruin Coach Terry Donahue will take his victories where he can get them these injury-plagued days. Any time a player can walk away from a scrimmage under his own power, that’s considered a victory.

Thirteen players sat out Saturday’s scrimmage, played before a crowd of about 2,500, because of injuries, the two key missing players being quarterback Ryan Fien (day to day because of a pulled thigh muscle) and tailback Skip Hicks (out at least half the season after arthroscopic knee surgery).

Edwards had a bruised leg, an injury not believed to be serious. Offensive tackle Andy Meyers also had to leave the field after suffering a contusion on his knee.

Hesitant to risk any further injuries, Donahue kept his two biggest offensive stars--tailback Karim Abdul-Jabbar and flanker Kevin Jordan--on the sideline all afternoon.

Among those who did play, the standouts were:

--Freshman quarterback Cade McNown, who looked poised and in control in completing 12 of 16 for 117 yards the first time he stepped on the Rose Bowl grass.

--Tailbacks Thaddeus Massey, who gained 68 yards in 19 carries and scored two touchdowns, and James Milliner, who had 71 yards in 17 carries.

--The defense, which scored twice. Safety Shaun Williams returned an interception 39 yards into the end zone, and fellow safety Abdul McCullough caused a fumble, recovered it and then ran 86 yards for a touchdown.
