LOS PADRES FOREST : Repaired Trail Opens to Public

Share

The popular Ortega Trail in Los Padres National Forest has reopened after being closed since 1993, officials with the U.S. Forest Service said.

Two years ago, the 10.5-mile trail was damaged by mudslides and washouts during flooding, and in 1994 a brush fire delayed repairs.

Trail repairs, which started last fall, were paid with state funds and a grant from the California Off-Highway Vehicle Commission, officials said.

The southern terminus of the trail is about two miles north of Wheeler Gorge Campground on the west side of California 33, and the northern terminus is on Cherry Creek Road.

The trail is recommended for hikers and advanced motorcycle riders, and because of steepness is not advised for equestrians.
