Valleywide : ‘Albedo’ Provides Relief From Heat

Share

Patchy low clouds and fog--caused by a weather system that also sparked scattered showers and thunderstorms in the desert and mountain regions--combined to offer some relief from the summer heat in the San Fernando Valley this weekend.

“There just has been a slight cool-down,” said National Weather Service spokesman Bill Hoffer, who said that a weather effect called the “albedo” was responsible.

Simply put, it means that the tops of clouds were reflecting back the sun’s rays and stopping the heat from reaching the ground.

In the Valley it kept high temperatures in the upper 80s to mid-90s and overnight low temperatures in the upper 50s to mid-60s.

The patchy low clouds and fog were expected to continue today in the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys.

The showers and thunderstorms reported Sunday over the eastern Mojave Desert were concentrated in California along Interstate 15 near the Nevada border.

Travelers in the desert and mountain areas of Southern California were cautioned by the National Weather Service that the thunderstorms are expected to continue today.
