North Hollywood : Police Open Center for 2 Bicycle Officers

A police service center opened Monday in a North Hollywood bank building to provide nearby residents an accessible place to file reports, pick up information and meet detectives.

Located at the California Federal Bank branch in the 4800 block of Laurel Canyon Boulevard, the center is little more than a small cubicle with partitions for walls and just enough room for the two Los Angeles Police Department bicycle officers who staff it part time.

Despite its unimpressive appearance, the facility was hailed by elected officials, law enforcement officers and residents as an important tool in fostering partnerships between police and surrounding neighborhoods.

“We are here to celebrate the community spirit that made the center possible,” said Mayor Richard Riordan, who echoed the slogan of a promotional campaign touting Los Angeles. “Together we are fighting crime, together we are making Los Angeles better, because together we are the best.”

The site will serve residents in North Hollywood, Studio City and Valley Village.

“I just think it’s a wonderful thing,” said Lori Dinkin, president of the Valley Village Homeowners Assn. “I’ve talked to a lot of residents and they feel more protected. They feel they’re being cared about.”

About 70 police service centers now operate in the Los Angeles area. This will be the third in North Hollywood. The centers are thought to provide an informal, convenient alternative to overcrowded and aging police stations for residents who might live miles away.

“We’re set up for any type of reports that might be needed,” said Officer David Martinez, one of two officers assigned to the center. “This is just being more accessible to the community.”

A pair of residents showed their gratitude by sending the officers a bouquet of flowers. “Thanks for all your hard work and effort,” read the attached card. “You are appreciated.”

The service center will be open 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mondays, 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesdays and 4 to 6 p.m. Fridays.
