Westside : BACHELOR’S DEGREES

Share

Santa Monica College unveiled plans this week to allow business and liberal arts students to earn bachelor’s degrees under a partnership with two Cal State University campuses.

When classes begin Monday, professors from Cal State Northridge will teach business courses at the Pico Boulevard campus. Professors from Cal State Dominguez Hills will teach liberal arts classes.

Until now, Santa Monica College has been a two-year school, where students earned associate of arts degrees before transferring to four-year universities to complete their upper-division course work. Under the new system, students can earn bachelor’s degrees in business administration and liberal arts without leaving the Santa Monica campus.

College officials said the new arrangement will be more convenient for students because it will reduce the amount of time spent commuting to other schools.

About 100 students--who will pay tuition to the Cal State schools--are expected to enroll for the fall semester, college spokesman Bruce Smith said.
