North Hills : Service to Celebrate the Dignity of Labor

Share

Affirmative action and the minimum wage top the list of topics to be addressed in the Seventh Annual Interfaith Labor Day Celebration Service, held by the San Fernando Valley Interfaith Council and the Valley Labor Political Education Council.

“There seems to be a bit of classism in society,” said Barry Smedberg, executive director of the Valley Interfaith Council. “Those who are professionals are treated differently than those who work with their hands.”

The service was put together to honor those who work. The service celebrating the dignity of labor will start at 6 p.m. on Sept. 4 at the Unitarian Universalist Society, 9550 Haskell Ave., North Hills.

A discussion on “Affirmative Action, Jobs and the Minimum Wage,” will start at 7:30 p.m. with state Sen. Hilda Solis (D-El Monte), chair of the Senate Industrial Relations Committee and the first Latina elected to the state Senate.

Also speaking will be Joe Hicks, executive director of the Multi-Cultural Collaborative, a private, nonprofit coalition of about a dozen Los Angeles community groups. He is also former executive director of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference.

A barbecue will be run by Service Employees International Union Local 347. All union members in the Valley, as well as the general public, are welcome.
