COLLEGE FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : UCLA : Players Relieved After Two-a-Day Drills
It wasn’t exactly like winning the Rose Bowl. Or beating USC.
But the UCLA football team was overjoyed about the end of two-a-day workouts.
The Bruins began practicing only once a day Thursday in preparation for their Sept. 2 season opener against Miami.
The 10 days of double practice took their toll. Tailback Skip Hicks injured his knee and will be lost for at least half the season. A dozen others were hurt badly enough to miss last Saturday’s scrimmage.
“No matter who you are going against in the sport of football, there is a lot of banging,” Coach Terry Donahue said. “I’m glad it’s over.”

Among the freshmen who might have earned some playing time, Donahue said, are quarterback Cade McNown, fullbacks Craig Walendy and Cheyane Caldwell, offensive lineman Kris Farris, defensive lineman Pete Holland, linebackers Michael Wiley and Ramogi Huma and punter Chris Sailer.

Freshman linebacker Travor Turner will sit out this season as a redshirt.
