CLARK CARE: A fund established for the widow and son of a slain Simi Valley police officer now exceeds $70,000 in cash donations (B1). . . . “Everyone is giving--from the auto dealership to the housewife to senior citizens. It’s wonderful,” says Councilwoman Barbara Williamson, a vice president of Simi Valley Bank, which is administering the Michael Clark Trust Fund. . . . Among those donating was a fifth-grade Bible-school class from Sunrise Christian Fellowship, which gave $15 from a recycling project.

EASY LIVING: The syndicated comic strip “Cathy” suggested this week that a better life can be found by operating a bed and breakfast in bucolic Ojai. . . . However, B&B; owner Mary Nelson has put her six-room Ojai Manor Hotel on the market for “just under $600,000” so she can try something new. “Maybe I’ll move to Mexico for a year and study Spanish,” says Nelson, whose family has owned the former schoolhouse--one of the city’s oldest buildings--since 1955.

LESSON PLAN: Though strong opinions about Vietnam drew most students to a new class at Moorpark College (B1), Simi Valley’s Steven Smith admitted he enrolled just to earn units toward his graduation. . . . After listening to Prof. Frank Bianchino, above, relate personal tales of fighting during the war, Smith says his curiosity was piqued. “I honestly didn’t think I’d come more than a few times, but after tonight I plan to be here every [week].”

SANTA P’OPOLY: Two local cities--Oxnard and Santa Paula--are showing their true gamesmanship and will soon be featured in board games loosely based on the famous one that turned the streets of Atlantic City into household names. . . . The games, to be sold for $19.95, will spotlight city landmarks and are sponsored by companies in the two cities. “So far, 62% of the board has been sold,” says Leyda Marcareno of the Santa Paula Chamber of Commerce.
