Officials at the University of California cleared basketball star Tremaine Fowlkes and sports agent James Casey of all wrongdoing Friday, saying that allegations involving an automobile are “absolutely not true.”

John Kasser, Cal’s athletic director, said the school completed its investigation Friday afternoon.

“All that we know is that Tremaine never had a car, never had a car registered to him,” Kasser said. “He did drive the [Ford] Explorer belonging to a friend of the [Fowlkes] family, which was not Casey. That’s all I can tell you. . . . [The car] is a personal matter and it [car] was somebody else’s and it was just unfortunate. We will send a written report to the NCAA.”

Fowlkes, last season’s Pacific-10 Conference freshman of the year, had previously denied receiving a car from an agent, which would be in violation of NCAA rules. Athletes can lose their eligibility.

“We will look at the report and review it,” said David Price, associate commissioner of the Pac-10.

Ron Fowlkes, Tremaine’s father, said he does not know who the family friend is who provided the car. “The [person] is probably a friend of Tremaine’s. . . . I never saw him drive a Ford Explorer at all. He didn’t have it down here [in Los Angeles]. If he had it up there, I don’t know.”

Kasser, who said he is satisfied that his department conducted a thorough investigation, explained the situation as “bizarre.”

“All I can tell you is that at the present time the car is in the possession of no one,” he said, declining further explanation.

Ron Fowlkes, who has been in touch with Cal all week, would not elaborate on his part in the investigation. However, Fowlkes did tell The Times on Tuesday that in June he had called Casey and asked him to come to his office to discuss some “concerns” he had.

Casey, an NBA player agent from 1990-93, has denied the allegations against him. He is a distant relative of Cal point guard Jelani Gardner, according to Gardner’s father, Tom.
