LANDMARKS OF TWENTIETH-CENTURY DESIGN: An Illustrated Handbook by Kathryn B. Hiesinger & George H. Marcus (Abbeville: $29.95; 431 pp.). The 400 objects in this handsome reference book are considered turning points in the history of modern industrial design. They range from the practical (telephones, radios) to the ornamental (vases, screens, glassware). The furniture reflects the aesthetic history of the 20th Century, moving from the sensual grace of a desk by Hector Guimard to the angular elegance of a Frank Lloyd Wright lamp to a horribly garish sideboard by Memphis designer Ettore Sottsass Jr.
