2nd Oil Spill From Unocal Field Runs Into Fullerton Park

For the second time in two months, about 200 gallons of crude oil leaked from a Unocal oil field and flowed into Hillcrest Park.

Company officials said the spill created a sticky, stinky mess, but posed no health hazard.

The spill began sometime between late Friday night and early Saturday morning when water from a broken water main flooded an oil well and caused the spill.

The gooey crude flowed into the park from property owned by Unocal about 1 1/2 miles upstream, and pooled in an area known as the Duck Pond.

Unocal workers spent Saturday cleaning up the spill, damming it with containment booms, and the company plans to clear the last remnants of oil by this afternoon.

In July, about 200 gallons of oil leaked from an oil field at East Bastanchury Road and Brea Boulevard and entered a storm drain that flowed into Hillcrest Park.

At that time, Fullerton fire officials said the spill was caused by a corroded pipeline.
